Today I am reviewing the Benchmade 580 Barrage assisted folder. I got this knife from a buddy of mine to demo and review. I'carried this knife over the last couple of days cutting up boxes, branches, rope and other misc items. As I expected, this knife has tremendous cutting abilities. Benchmade knives are in my mind one of the best on the market and certainly one of the best for the money. This Benchmade 580 is balanced well, slim and narrow enough I can wear it in my front jeans pocket daily while still allowing both fast deployment and access to the contents of my pocket without displacement.
The above picture shows the 3.60" 154CM Stainless Steel Drop Point blade. The open and close action on this knife is smooth and FAST! Benchmade utilizes their Axis-Assist locking mechanism on this knife. The least little bit of pressure on the ambidextrous thumb studs flings the blade open. My buddy said out of the box this knife came extremely sharp and was appropriately centered. He's had this knife for almost two-half years now and uses it all the time and the lock up on it is solid. Absolutely no wiggling at all.
The two pictures above show the handle and the spine of the knife. The handles are made out of Valox which are nice quality. The grooves on the outer edge allow your fingers to firmly grip the knife. The liner spacer runs the whole length of the knife handle and right into the Axis-lock switch.
The above picture here shows the 420J Stainless Steel Liners. Just like the Benchmade 707 Sequel I reviewed in the past, Benchmade went the extra step to put more "awesomeness" into this knife by drilling out the liners. This knife comes in at 4.2oz. While it may be a little heavier than what I'm used to EDC'ing, this knife is certainly exceptional considering it's durability and overall quality.
The above two pictures will cover the pocket clip. Benchmade used their traditional split arrow pocket clip.
The pocket clip on the Benchmade 580 Barrage can be arranged for left or right carry and tip up only. In the pocket the 580 sits pretty good. No complaints there.
Things I Like:
Size: Overall this is a great sized knife. Between the blade length and handle size I feel Benchmade did a great job with this knife.
Materials: The 154CM is a great steel. It holds a great edge and fairly easy to sharpen.
Axis Assist: The Benchmade axis assist allows the blade to open fast and smooth. There is absolutely no wiggle when opened.
Pocket Clip: The pocket clip positioning on the 580 is very nice. Allows for easy clipping in the pant pocket and deploying without any hiccups. And it sits the knife just right. Not a lot exposed like other knives.
Origin: Made in the USA. Who doesn't like a American Made Product?
Things I Dislike:
Handles: The Valox handles are nice don't get me wrong. But I feel this knife needs G10 scales to really make this a 5-star knife.
Liner Spacer: I don't like how the liner spacer runs the whole length of the knife. It makes cleaning this knife a little harder than a knife that has a partially open liner.
