Are you in the market for a two or three day backpack. Or maybe a large EDC bag? Don't wanna spend a ton of money without sacrificing quality? How about $45 bucks?!? That's roughly 40-50% less than most other bags of it's size.
The LA Police Gear Operator Backpack would be an excellent bag for you to consider. It's got a lot of different pockets for organizing your equipment and on the exterior a lot of molle webbing for attaching your molle gear. I got my bag (black one) about two and half weeks ago. Immediately after unboxing it my brother was totally impressed with the build quality and size he ordered one for himself. His previous bag was a Maxpedition Condor 2 which really didn't cut it for a three day expedition.
The bag is constructed using 600 denier nylon fabric which is very durable and water resistant. The zippers are heavy duty with real nice zipper pulls for ease of use. Just about every compartment has a real nice metal grommet at the bottom to drain any liquids that may make there way inside the compartment. One diverse topic I found on this bag is it's weight. While it's not the lightest bag on the market, it comes in very close to other bags of it's size. So lets take a better look at the bag...
The LAPG Operator bag is a full clam shell construction. I really like this design because it allows you to neatly pack and organize stuff in the main compartment.
The main compartment measures 20" x 14" x 7". In the picture above I have three pairs of cargo shorts and three shirts neatly placed. There is still room in there for maybe another two pairs of shorts or maybe three more shirts or any other gear needed. Inside the main compartment you see two vertical and two horizontal compression straps. I really like these because it keeps your load from shifting while on the move. Two thumbs up for that addition!
On the inside of the main compartment there are two netted compartments on the backside of the bag. Both are very ample in size to put a lot of stuff in. In the lower pocket I have a two person orange emergency tent and a 100ft roll of 550 Paracord. In the upper pocket I have a pocket ref book, a thermal cover and some Aleve. Even with those items in both pockets there is still quite a bit of room for more stuff if needed.
Moving to the exterior compartments on the bag. The front lower compartment measures 5" x 10" x 4". Inside here I like to keep my Esee 4 fixed blade knife, some glow tubes and a few wet-ones. On one side of the compartment you have three small separate mesh pockets and on the opposite side you have one mesh zipper pocket that runs the same height and length of the compartment.
Moving up to the next pocket. This one measures about 13x10. As you can see by the picture my arm is almost elbow deep in the pocket. This pocket I have dedicated to first aid stuff. In here I keep my Adventure Medical Kit. The first aid kit has a nice loop sewn into the bag so getting it in and out of the bag is super easy. There is room for other stuff in there if you need to stuff some other stuff in there. I have some extra gulls and some quikclot. I plan on changing the zipper pull and paracord from black to red on this particular pocket. This will make it easy for others to find first aid stuff should I not be able to access it myself.
Looking inside the second largest compartment on this bag you can see there is a lot of options for organization. There are three pen sleeves and two medium size sleeves. The two medium sleeves will hold an AR magazine or in my case I have a Kershaw Skyline knife and my Nitecore MT26 flashlight. There is elastic straps to keep things from sliding around in these medium sleeves.
Above the pen and medium sleeves are three large separate sleeves for documents etc. Here I keep maps and other documents and my nook android tablet.
Both sides of the bag are constructed identically the same. Both have lower side compartments, side carry handles and Radio Antenna Ports. On the left side lower pocket I have a 32oz. nalgene water bottle which fits nice and snug. In the right side lower pocket I have my Leatherman Charge TTi multi-tool and some other misc items.
Also on each side of the bag are two compression straps. These compress your load and keep things from shifting around while on the move. Or if you have a wet rain coat and don't wanna put it inside the bag you can compress it to the outside of the bag without getting the rest of your gear wet inside.
Taking a look at the back side of the bag. There is an ample amount of elevated padding. This elevated padding helps keep your back cool. You can also see the water bladder pouch with the back plate. I really like the back plate because it keeps things inside the bag from poking you in the back. I'm pretty sure you could also fit a 13 or 14" laptop in there if you opt out of a water bladder.
The shoulder straps on the LAPG Operator Backpack are superb! Nothing irks me more than a bag with too thin of shoulder straps. I am sure everyone has experienced a bag with thin shoulder straps and a decent size load. The weight of the load digs the straps into the shoulders making it unbearable to carry the bag. That's not the case with this bag!! The straps are wide and very thick. Also on the shoulder straps are a few different mounting points.
This bag also has a adjustable chest support strap that you can fully adjust and a waist strap for securing the bag on long hauls. Here is a picture of the bag with the waist strap. The waist strap is constructed just like the shoulder straps with thick and wide padded straps.
The two pictures above exemplifies the quality of stitching done on this bag. The handle on top of the bag is double stitched and folded over for durability and strength. The shoulder straps are double stitched and cross stitched.
My final conclusion on this LAPG Operator bag: Overall it's a great bag for the money. It offers up a ton of organization options to suit all purposes of having a backpack. It has a ton of molle webbing for those that like to attach stuff on the exterior of the bag. Another thing I really like about the bag is the compression straps inside the main compartment. I've had bags in the past without them and it just sucks when stuff inside the bag starts shifting around during your haul. If you're in the market for a bag definitely give this one a try.
