Today I am reviewing the Streamlight Stinger DS LED HL series flashlight. This is the high end model for the Stinger series. It has all the great features and functionality of a Stinger flashlight with an incredible 640 lumens on high.
The LED on this Stinger light uses what Streamlight calls their C4 technology. The C4 LED produces brilliant, powerful, blinding light that is brighter than a high-intensity LED. The orange-peel reflector creates an intense beam that pierces the darkness. You get the long run times and indestructibility of an LED combined with an increased level of brightness that leaves other LEDs in the dark. Overall I am pretty pleased with the output of this light. It has a real hot center with a good amount of flood.
Some key points about this Stinger LED light:
- Uses less power so the batteries last longer
- The LED is impervious to shock with a 50,000 hour lifetime
- Unbreakable polycarbonate lens with scratch-resistant coating
- IPX4 water-resistant; 1 meter impact resistance tested
The Streamlight Stinger DS LED HL has dual operation switches. You can access the three lighting modes and strobe via the tail cap or the head-mounted switch. I really like the ease of going through light output modes. You press and hold the bottom and it will cycle through the modes. And to go into strobe mode you simply double click the button. I also like the fact that you can operate the light without fully depressing the switch, great for quickly turning the light on/off without cycling the switch.
The body on this light is constructed using machined aircraft aluminum with non-slip rubberized comfort grip; anti-roll rubber ring included. Charging contacts are on the back of the light, on an elevated triangle that orients the light in the charging cradle. The tail cap switch is recessed, allowing the light to tail-stand. I like that the light feels solid. It's size would make it a good duty light and I am sure it would have no problem reaching out on a target 150-200 yards away if needed.
The Streamlight Stinger DS LED HL uses a 3-cell 3.6 volt NiMH rechargeable battery. Streamlight states that it is good for up to 1000 recharges. The fact that it is rechargeable gets even better. No more buying batteries in bulk. This light comes with two charging docking stations. If you have any other Stinger rechargeable lights they will work with the docking stations also. I also comes with a mobile power adapter to charge the light in your vehicle which I really like. If you are a police officer that means you can charge this thing "on the go" and don't have to worry about any down time.
From left to right are the three light output modes. This was at approx 30-40 feet away. As you can see, on high mode this thing lights up with a very hot center beam and tons of outer flood. Whether you are a law enforcement officer or emergency services or a general user, this light will do a great job at lighting up a area as you can see above. The strobe feature is nice if you need to signal somebody, be seen while on the side of the road in traffic, or to distract a subject before a take down
My final conclusion on the Streamlight Stinger DS LED HL: In a nutshell, the light is awesome! The construction is well planned and tough. If you need a super bright , rechargeable flashlight you can't go wrong with one of these. It is a little larger of a light than I am acustom to having. Most of my lights are more geared towards everyday carry duties. This light would be more ideal for someone in law enforcement, emergency services or a nice light to keep in your vehicle in case of an emergency or camping trip. The build construction and how it feels in the hand along with the brightness of the light will impress you instantly!
