Today I am reviewing the Spyderco Endura 4 C10FPBL. I have been carrying this knife almost every day for the last week and half. While almost everybody is familiar with this knife, it's always nice to see it reviewed since it's such a great knife and Spyderco continues to keep it in their lineup.
I'm not super familiar with older versions of the Endura but from what I read the older versions only had a tip up carry configuration. While that doesn't bother me, some people prefer tip down which this current model accommodates.
The Spyderco Endura 4 is offered in a few blade grinds and plain or serrated edge. I chose the plain edge full flat grind because of it's great slicing ability. My day to day cutting task consist of heavy duty cardboard shipping boxes, rope, opening mail and the typical food preparation. And when it comes to this knife it met and exceeded all my expectations!
No joke, out of the box this knife was the sharpest knife I've ever owned thus far. Spyderco does such a good job at making sure their knives come out of the box with a wicked edge on them. I've had a handful of Spydercos so far and not one of them disappointed me yet. The Endura 4 comes in three different blade steel options: VG-10, ZDP-189, and soon Aogami Super Blue. I chose the VG-10 because I have prior experience with sharpening that steel and I can get it super sharp when needed. VG-10 holds a great edge and it's fairly easy to sharpen. I've been carrying this knife for almost two weeks now and it still has the original out of the box edge and it will still take the hair off your arm.
The body on the Spyderco Endura 4 uses fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handles with a reverse directional semi-aggressive texturing to keep the knife from slipping in your hand. The handles measure about 5" in length which I really like because I can get a full grip on the knife without my pinky finger curled under the butt of the knife.
In THIS picture you can see there is some slight jimping on the top of the handles that goes into the jimping on the back of the knife (thumb ramp). I'm able to get a firm grip on the knife without my thumb slipping even though the jimping doesn't look aggressive. And after using the knife for all day my thumb isn't all torn up like some other knives I used. Blue not your color of choice? Don't worry, the Endura 4 is offered in quite a few other colors too!
The interior construction on the body consist of full length stainless steel liners that are skeletonized to keep weight minimal for this knife. One thing I really like about this knife is the attention to detail with the liners. Spyderco had the liners recessed into the handles (Picture) giving it a clean look plus it helped keep the thickness profile thinner.
The blade rides on phosphor bronze bushings with a adjustable torx pivot screw. I haven't had to fool with mine at all. Right out of the box it opened and closed super smooth and fast. And the blade was perfectly centered. Lock up on the knife is rock solid. Even after all the use I put it through there is still absolutely no movement when it locks open.
The pocket clip is blackened steel, and can be positioned tip up or down, left or right handed. It has a hole cut through it to allow use with the lanyard hole when tip-up. I think a deep carry Spyderco wire clip would have been really awesome on this knife. But overall the black metal clip works great.
My final conclusion on the Spyderco Endura 4: Overall I think the Spyderco Endura 4 is a awesome knife. It provides great materials, ergonomics, and value. For an EDC knife, the Endura 4 is huge! However, it easily disappears in my pants pocket, and is very comfortable to carry. If you are looking for a powerful yet lightweight utility blade, the Spyderco Endura 4 is definitely the way to go - Try one out! I got mine from Knife-Depot and it shipped fast!
